I guess on some level it's a personal song about the predicament posed to anyone who's decided to stand up for God--including Jesus Himself who "endured the cross, despising the shame".(Heb.12)
In my experience a lot of that "shame" comes from those who initially seemed charmed by what they saw in us. At first they often want in, perhaps intrigued by it, like looking at a tree & appreciating it's fruit & the shade it provides but then objecting to the sap which gives it life. The they want to change it & control it, replace the sap. They do this by trying to shame or undermine it, encouraging you that YOU are the sap. "Come down off the wall & talk about how we can help you do better on your own" sort of thing. When that fails they'll turn against you & try to destroy you.
My role was, in a rather slap-stick way, presenting this character.
